Let’s face it . . .  some photographs are just more interesting than others. Some photographs not only drawn us in, but we might even gasp a little bit when we look at them, and they even make us feel something! And yet other photos remind us of looking through Uncle Sal’s vacation pictures! Why is that? Why do some photos capture our attention and make us feel things and others are just ho hum? And most importantly, how can we intentionally make our photographs more interesting and give them that wow factor?

Composition 101 is a 5-week, online course that examines the basic rules of composition and guides you how to apply them in your own photographs and take your photos from ho hum to wow! Through a series of 9 lessons, you will learn the basic compositional rules in photography like, the rule of thirds, leading lines, and framing to name just a few, and then practice applying them in your own photos.

How does the class work?

This online course is 5 weeks long and discusses many compositional guidelines with tons of examples. There will be a private forum open 24/7 for you to ask questions, get clarifications, and get feedback on your own images. Like all my classes, this class is quite interactive, (or not if you prefer to just sit back and soak it all in) and I’m there the entire time to answer questions, clarify information and offer feedback on all your images and assignments. Via the forum, you’ll also be able to see and learn what the other students are doing and asking and interact with them too. Yes, there will be assignments, and they are all totally optional, ’cause that’s how I roll! And there is no need to check in to the class at any particular time. You are encouraged to come and go as you please.

What do I need to take the class?

—A camera

—Access to the internet and a Facebook account

How much does it cost?

The cost is $249 for 5 weeks of instruction. Class size is limited and is available first come, first serve.

What is not covered in Composition 101

In this class we will not cover technical skills like how to use your camera or computer or editing techniques. If you are interested in these skills, please consider the Manual Mode, Beyond Manual or Lightroom 101 courses.

Don’t just take my word for it! Here’s what past students have to say.

Nancy takes you to the next level. Having a technically accurate photo is just the beginning. Having a photo that tells a story… Now that’s what moves people. Nancy takes you to that level. She is patient and knowledgeable. I would recommend this class to anyone that wants their photography to touch people’s lives.  ~Teresa

If you are feel you are “stuck” or in “rut” this class will quickly change that. It will give you so much to think about and be inspired by. You will gain all kinds of tools to make your photos more interesting. Nancy is a wonderful teacher. She gives easy to follow lessons, great examples and offers honest and encouraging feedback on your pictures throughout the class. If you are busy and fall behind, no problem. It is a work at your own pace class. Even if you are not out shooting you will be learning every week since the forum style of the class allows you to see what pictures others are taking and reading the feedback from Nancy. I can’t say enough good things about this class or about Nancy as a teacher. It was awesome!  ~Maureen

We covered so many great ideas in this class that had never occurred to me. I learned so much!  ~Brenda

This class exceeded all my expectations. It completely changed the way I take photos. The lessons were packed with valuable information and were easy to understand.
