So now you’re shooting in manual mode with your DSLR or mirrorless camera, but you know that there’s more to a good photo than that! Knowing how to shoot in manual mode to get the exposure you want is important, but so is focus and reading the light in your setting! Are you frustrated by not being able to get your little one in focus? Have you figured out how to shoot in manual mode, and some of your pictures are in focus but others aren’t? I can help you fix that! Maybe you have strange color casts in your photos. Or maybe even when you’re shooting in manual mode the background is too bright and the subject is too dark! I can help you fix that too! I want to show you how to focus, how to read the light in a room, know what angles to shoot from so you can get the photos you want!

As our 8 children have grown, I’ve been blessed to capture them during the beautiful seasons of their lives in photographs. Beyond Manual is an 4-week, online course for photographers who have already figured out how to shoot in manual mode, and are ready to take it to the next level. This class will not only give you the information you’ll need to learn new skills like getting sharp focus in the majority of your photos and learning how to read light, but also a a place to learn all of it and feedback from me so you’ll know if you’re on the right track and how to get even better. And I like to keep things simple and use easy-to-understand language, becuase I think that’s how we all learn best.

What does the Beyond Manual class cover?

  • Focus focus focus… and more focus.
  • Depth of field
  • Focusing mode – What they are when when to use one over the other
  • Specifically how to focus on what you want
  • Studying the light in a setting and which angles to use to get the photo you want
  • White balance – What it is and how to pick the best one for your setting.
  • How to create a custom white balance in camera
  • Metering modes – What they do and how to know which one to use

Are there are prerequisites for this class?

Yes. All students should know how what the exposure triangle is and be able to get proper exposure via manual mode in the majority of their photos prior to enrolling in this class. If you’d like some help with that, I recommend taking the Manual Mode class prior to this one.

How does the class work?

This class is not simply a PDF. Like all my classes, Beyond Manual is a partnership where we work together to learn the concepts. I’m going to walk you through each lesson, give you feedback on your photos and guide you to make them better. All of this takes place in a private Facebook group with me and the other students in the class. I’ll give you the lessons and assignments, which you can do or not, and one of the wonderful advantages of a group class is that you’ll get to see what other students are doing and asking too! There is no need to be online at any particular time because you choose when to check in. I will be available the whole time to help you through it. You can participate when the kids are in school, during nap time, only on the weekends or in the middle of the night in your jammies if you like. I’ll definitely be there to answer your questions and guide you through it.

What do I need to take the class?

—A DSLR or mirrorless camera

—Access to the Internet and a Facebook account

—Enthusiasm and time to learn and practice

How much does it cost?

$249.  Payment is taken at registration via Paypal (which accepts all major credit cards)

What do other students think of the class?
I took another class and decided I was too dumb to learn photography. You have given me hope that I CAN.  You make it all make sense and give awesome feedback along the way. THANK YOU!!! ~Jodi

Thank you, Nancy! I owe it all to you that I am finally able to catch the beauty of my children in photos. I look at the photos I took before your class and think if only I had known what I know now. My only regret is I didn’t take your class sooner! ~Kristen

I got some photography books out of the library more than a year ago to try to learn how to take better pictures, and didn’t get far. It all seemed kind of confusing and technical. This class has been so understandable! ~Mary

Thanks for everything, Nancy. I had to tell you a funny story that happened. I had printed a few pictures off at Walgreens.  When I picked them up the teenage clerk said that there was a slight problem and that a couple of the photos looked like a professional photographer had taken them and did I have permission to make prints?  I actually had to sign a copyright waiver!  It made me feel great that they thought my photos were stolen and I thanked the clerk for his compliment!  ~Cathy
Please feel free to give me a holler if you have any questions. I genuinely like questions! And I hope to see you there!
